The company, founded in 1995 with the financial support of Portuguese Ministry of Culture / Arts Institute and directed by the choreographer Olga Roriz, has been a reference of professional and artistic quality in contemporary dance at a national and international level, during the past twenty years.
What characterizes and distinguishes the Olga Roriz Company from all other, is the inseparable connection to the fact that it´s an author’s Company, and that same author, for the past 40 years, has created a vast work with an identity, style, an energetic and imaginative, differentiated and distinctive source.
The performances of Olga Roriz Company are fabric from a rich combination of elements, which have the faculty of exercising the audience with meanings, reason and imagination, as well as with a reflection about themes, that being current, create automatic complicities.
All the author’s work arises charged with metaphors and images which bring together the mundane and the original, love and absence, life and death, tragedy and humour, and where the ugliness doesn´t disguise itself but appears to the sight with a raw beauty and simplicity.
The method of Olga Roriz and the boldness of her works, since the beginning of her career until nowadays, have had the merit of questioning the role of contemporary dance, leading to the reflexion of its boundaries, structures and goals.
She was born in the North of Portugal, had an artistic training in dance in the course of S. Carlos National Theatre Dance School with Ana Ivanova and in the course of Lisbon National Conservatory Dance School.
From 1976 to 1992, she has integrated the Gulbeinkan Ballet cast under the direction of Jorge Salavisa, where she was the first dancer and the main choreographer.
She worked with renowned choreographers such as: Alvin Nokolais, Jiri Kylián, Louis Falco, HansVan Manen, Vasco Wellemkamp, Karine Saporta, Lar Lubovitch, Peter Sparling, Elisa Monte and Christopher Bruce.
In 1992, she took the lead of the Lisbon’s Dance Company artistic direction. In 1995 she founded the Olga Roriz Company, in which she is both director and choreographer. Her dance, theatre and video repertoire is formed by more than ninety works.
She has created and re-established works to several national and international companies, among them the Gulbeinkan Ballet, National Ballet Company (Portugal), Ballet Teatro Guaira (Brazil), Monte Carlo Ballets (Monaco), National Ballet Company (Spain), English National Ballet (England), American Repertory Ballet (USA), Maggio Danza and Alla Scala (Italy).
Internationally her works were presented in the main European capitals, as well as in USA, Brazil, Japan, Egypt, Cape Verde, Senegal, Thailand, Macao, Mozambique and South Korea.
She has a vast path in creation and movement in Theatre and Opera. In the video area she directed three films and several of her works are edited in DVD by the Real Films production, directed by Rui Simões. An extensive biography about her life and work was published by Assírio&Alvim publisher and written by Mónica Guerreiro.
Since 1982, Olga Roriz is distinguished with relevant awards, both nationally as internationally. Among these it stands out the 1º Prize of The Dance Contest in Osaka, Japan (1988), The Dance Choreography Award of the London Time Out Magazine (1993), Almada Award (2004), Commendation with The Order of Infante D.Henrique insignia – Grand Officer by the President of the Republic (2004), Portuguese Society of Authors and Milleniumbcp Grand Prize (2008), Latinidade Award (2012), among others equally important.
20 Years COR
Within the celebrations of the 20 years of existence and the 40 years of career of the director and choreographer Olga Roriz, the Company presented during 2015 an extensive and diversified programme on its repertoire in the main theatres, in Mozambique and South Korea.
2015 was, without doubt, a year of national and international expansion of the Company, giving visibility of its artistic style, fruit of a continuous work during two decades.
We mean by FOR (Olga Roriz training), all the company activities that are connected to training, despite the theme or the target audience.
Aiming to expand the technical, artistic and professional know-how, within an organized educative activity and with a curricular logic that can be an extension of the Company own goals.
Her teaching staff, directed by the Company artistic guidelines and the choreographer’s vast experience, set out a coherent pedagogical project and in total complicity between the several proposed areas.
FOR- Dance Theatre
The course FOR Dance Theatre, directed by the choreographer Olga Roriz, alongside with dancers from her Company and also high specialized professors, has the purpose to hand over the baton of a long knowledge legacy, training dynamic, contemporary and individualists interpreters / dancers with a high technical qualification, with theatre abilities and that participate actively in the creative process together with the choreographer.
The pedagogical programme FOR is formed by the subjects of Physical Conditioning, Contemporary Dance, Repertoire, Improvisation, Choreographic Composition, Creation Workshops, Voice, Music, Scenography, Creation Workshops, Voice, Music, Scenography, Yoga, Dramaturgy, Anatomy, Dance/Theatre History, Costumes, Light, Sound and Video.
The FOR Modular appears from a great demand made by professionals and students of performative arts, who could not integrate the FOR Dance Theatre due it’s extension, feeling the need to complement their training by experimenting the creative methods of the choreographer Olga Roriz. Therefore, the course was open to new students, but only with one year duration and with some of the practical subjects: Physical Conditioning, Contemporary, Improvisation and Repertoire. Its goal is to train dynamic and versatile interpreters.
In parallel to the training classes and courses, FOR promotes workshops, short-term actions, which will elapsing throughout the year according to a timetable and specific price lists.

Where to reopen the path, what’s the subject, the landscape, the goal? Looking for us, for debris.
Going straight… straight ahead, don’t look back. Eyes closed unwittingly to think, the cold, the fear of cold, the hunger.
There, nowhere, a lost place, hard, torn.
There, the place craving for the unknown. Memories on an empty stomach.
The darkness, the body glued to another body and another, and another…
The son against the chest, blanket on the back and suitcases, bags, dolls, into another small hand made of flesh and bone.
Devastated feet, stepped on each dust. The rocks…
The thick sky, an open sky and a head about to crack. No longer knowing about the pain, the anger has been lost.
The doubt, the insecurity and the smallness tires.
Losing a least power, dignity lost, tires.
Demolished the last ray of comfort tires.

A Sagração da Primavera
(The Rite os spring)

Premiered on 29th May, 2016 – Teatro Municipal Joaquim Benite, Almada
2013 celebrates the centenary of the creation of The Rite of Spring by Nijinsky/Stravinsky.
Being the second time Olga Roriz creates this piece, the choreographer confesses:
– “Something was left undone, much was left to say. I intend to find another way of being, an accumulation of the same but always under renovation, never understood. Ignoring taboos, rewriting history, adding references and creating the moment. Passion, memories and knowledge will remain intact, those will be respected but without voice, without space, without present. Body to body in a never peaceful confrontation.”
The revisiting of a larger work such as The Rite of Spring and the insistence of her longevity as a dancer and performer, which is transmitted by her own body and her choreographic and artistic legacy continues now on building, developing and sharing, with the public, her gestual presence and her unique interpretation.
After such a long journey it is imperative that the legacy of this choreographer is transmitted to new generations in order not to lose what is, already, a Portuguese cultural heritage.
